Yesterday’s Result: 68% of voters answered correctly. Paul Pierce was known as “The Truth,” a nickname bestowed upon him by Shaquille O’Neal. On March 13, 2001, Pierce scored 42 points on 13-of-19 shooting on the Lakers’ home court. After the game, Shaq pulled aside Boston Herald writer Steve Bulpett and gave him the following quote: “My name is Shaquille O’Neal and Paul Pierce is the truth. Quote me on that and don’t take nothing out.” |

The Boston Celtics opened their preseason with a 124-113 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Luka Garza led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Devin Carter added 17 points. Baylor Scheierman and Jordan Walsh chipped in 16 points apiece, and Hugo González finished with 15 as Boston showcased its depth. The Cavaliers struggled to keep pace in the fourth quarter, scoring just 17 points. |
The Miami Heat defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 128-118, using a strong second quarter to take control. Miami poured in 40 points in the period and finished with 128. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding four rebounds and four assists. Andrew Wiggins contributed 13 points, while Tim Hardaway Jr. chipped in 11 off the bench. The Pelicans kept scoring throughout but could not close the gap. |
The Brooklyn Nets spoiled the Philadelphia 76ers' star-studded lineup debut with a 114-108 win. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown joined Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe in the same starting lineup for the first time. Brown led Philadelphia with 18 points, while Maxey added 14. James finished with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds, making all eight of his free throws before sitting out the second half. Embiid had six points and eight turnovers as Brooklyn rallied after trailing 58-56 at halftime. |
The Washington Wizards edged the defending champion New York Knicks 111-109, rallying in the fourth quarter to steal a road win. Trae Young contributed 15 points and four assists for Washington, which outscored New York 30-25 in the final period. The Wizards also had the edge from beyond the arc, making 13 of 33 three-pointers compared with the Knicks' 11 of 38. Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart scored 13 points apiece for New York, but the Knicks could not hold on despite leading for much of the game. |
The Atlanta Hawks came back from a 23-point deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs 123-116 in the Spurs' preseason opener. San Antonio looked in control early, with rookie Dylan Harper leading the team with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists. Stephon Castle added 14 points, while Victor Wembanyama finished with nine points, six rebounds and a block in limited minutes. After the starters sat, Atlanta's reserves changed the game. Asa Newell scored 16 points off the bench, while rookie Kingston Flemings added 15 in his return to his hometown. The Hawks also made 18 three-pointers, including 10 in the second quarter alone. |
The Los Angeles Lakers held off the Sacramento Kings 114-110, earning another preseason win behind Luka Doncic and Sandro Mamukelashvili. Doncic led Los Angeles with 23 points, while Mamukelashvili added 19 points, three rebounds and four assists off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting. The Lakers built a comfortable lead before Sacramento made the final score closer in garbage time. The game was far from clean, however, as the teams combined for 50 turnovers and the Lakers gave up 20 offensive rebounds. |
