The parking lot of the Southview Mall was a sea of big American iron in the summer of 1978. You parked your Chevy or your Ford as close to the Sears entrance as you could get and checked your reflection in the chrome bumper. You had to look right. You wore a collared shirt, tucked in, and your hair was combed back with a little water from the bathroom sink. |
In those days, if you wanted to work, you went to the work. You did not send a signal into the air and hope a computer liked your keywords. You walked through the heavy glass doors, past the smell of roasted nuts at the Sears candy counter, and you looked for a person in a tie. |
I remember walking into a Long John Silver's on a Tuesday afternoon. It was two o'clock, the dead space between lunch and dinner. The air smelled like frying oil and malt vinegar. I walked up to the counter and did not look at the menu. I looked at the girl behind the register and asked to speak to the manager. |
