The mailbox lid would clatter shut and there it was. It did not come in a plastic bag or a box. It arrived just as it was, a thick, heavy slab of paper with a glossy cover that felt cold from the November air. The Sears Wish Book was a three-pound promise that the winter was finally about to get interesting.

It was bigger than the phone book. The spine was square and yellow, or sometimes white, and it smelled like a mix of wet basement and fresh ink. If you put your nose right up to the pages, you could smell the glue. It was a chemical scent that meant Christmas was coming, and it was the best thing we had to read all year.

My sister and I had a system. We were not allowed to take the catalog into our rooms because my mother said it would disappear under the beds. We had to sit on the rug in the den, right in front of the floor heater that ticked every time the fan kicked on. We had one red Bic pen between us.

The rules were clear. You could circle what you wanted, but you could not circle everything. If you circled a whole page, my father would look at it and say you were being greedy and then nobody would get anything. You had to be strategic. You had to pick the one thing you really needed
