Italian Silvia Malaguzzi creates amazing Egyptian inspired necklaces. Her modern take on the ancient world's statement necklaces comes from not just her creative talent but her deep knowledge of jewelry history.
She is an art historian and expert in antique jewelry. Her graduating thesis was actually on
"The pearl and its iconography in painting between Renaissance and Baroque." Since then she has continued to study the use of jewelry and gemstones in art and its symbolism in paintings.
She also manages to find time collecting precious jewels and precious objects and designing her awesome necklaces. Silvia used all kinds of beads, often big ones, to great effect. They would look fabulous with strapless dresses and gowns worthy of any red carpet event!
I had a very difficult time trying to select my favorites from her outstanding collection. Her necklaces clearly show the bold collar and stacked style the ancient Egyptians favored. They would have used gemstones or
Egyptian faience, an early form of ceramic.
Silvia still teaches about the history of Renaissance art (in English) in the Florence Program of the Fashion Institute of Technology of the State University of New York as well the history of jewelry at the Ent-Art Polimoda (International Institute of Fashion Design and Marketing) in Florence. She also writes for various publications and organizes conferences! A very busy designer indeed!
Silvia now has an Etsy store
