One of the most elegant illuminated necklace designs I have come across has to be
this one by Mikaela Holmes on Instructables. She is a costume and experimental fashion designer and artist. This necklace uses el (electroluminescent) wire which is lit up using just a 9V battery. El wire is used by wearable tech designers.
Her tutorial shows her skill with leather. The el wire is threaded through slits in the leather strips. She also included a neat leather pouch for the battery. Although she used a laser cutter and a drawing program, the designer also reassures us hand cutting from her patterns also works - just takes longer! The only issue is the patterns are in the Illustrator program format so if you are interested and don't have it, you'll have to contact her through Instructables and see if she can provide other formats.
