THE BEADING GEM'S JOURNAL

Melody MacDuffee's $30 Twisted Wire Jewelry Workshop Video Giveaway

Melody MacDuffee is a wire jewelry artist who does beautiful filigree like designs with twisted wire. I wrote about her designs and her work with Soul Somanya last week.  Her distinctive style of jewelry making was also the subject of her first book, Lacy Wire Jewelry, which I reviewed a few years ago.

Melody has kindly offered to give away her twisted wire jewelry workshop online video class worth $30 to one lucky winner.  I have reviewed it and was suitably impressed by not just the instructional quality but the range of tutorials included in this workshop. The tutorials average about 30 minutes each - the total run time from beginning to end is more than 220 minutes. You can watch any portion as many times as you want.

You learn how to make 7 stunning designs as shown below. It is as close to attending a class as possible - a good thing if you cannot get to classes.  Insomniacs can watch it at 2 am in the morning should they wish to!

You don't really need much in the way of tools - just basic tools like pliers.  Melody forms shapes with just her hands so I recommend looking for some appropriate mandrels around the house if you have trouble forming them.

Lesson 1 is the  twisted wire earrings project which also covers the basics of her technique.

Lesson 2 is the branching out necklace which expands on the basic principles.

Melody teaches how to add the twisted filigrees into wire frames for Lesson 3.

As you can see the tutorials increase with complexity as the workshop progresses. Lesson 4 is the filigree cuff. It does need some tweaking to get the twisted wires into position.

Lesson 5 is the free form brooch project.

Lesson 6 is for a statement bezel ring with an open design.  Melody does not show it but this can easily be made into a pendant or even earrings as the ring design is quite large.

And finally, Lesson 7 is for a bezel floral pendant where the twisted wire is used to decorate the front of a plain cabochon.

The video workshop is well structured with a contents sidebar enabling the student to hop to different sections within a tutorial. It is not immediately obvious how, but in order to stop the video, one just has to click anywhere on the video.  Or if you hover the cursor over the video, you will see the bar with the stop and start button. What I really like is the option to watch the video at different speeds and to implement a 30 second repeat of a step with just a click.

Melody is also offering a discount of 33% off if you wish to purchase it. This offer is valid until the end of January, 2015. Please note the online video is on Craftsy, a paid tutorial site.  You do have to join.  The video will always be available in your account to view anytime after purchase.
