I reviewed Nealey Patel's first book, Jewelry for the New Romantic, quite a while ago. His amazing combination of beading with beading wire was so inspirational -
a must see if you haven't come across his work before. This Oklahoma-based graphics designer and associate creative director of a local advertising firm, started beading back in high school. He particularly enjoys teaching the craft.
Nealey has now come out with a new book which explores his take on wire, beads and fiber. I recently received it,
Jewelry Made with Wire and Fiber for review. This book is totally different from the other book. 15 colorful and funky designs showcase his love of color and unique assemblage techniques. Beads and the patterned flat and round fiber cords he uses are what add considerable color to the projects. The projects can definitely be done with muted neutral colors if preferred so long as an awl can easily be used to pierce through the cords in preparation for wire work as required for many of the designs.
The simple wire cold connection techniques used means there is no need for torch work. So this book is definitely within the capabilities of beginners. Basic tools as well as a wire jig are all that are needed.
Piercing the cords as shown in many of the designs such as the
Primal necklace and the
Pandora earrings below, allows for the addition of other design elements. This not only extends the pieces in size but creates lots of creative opportunities!
Wrapping wire around the cords also gives the designs more interest. One of my favorite designs from the book is the
Stardust necklace. It's not just the wire coils accenting the colored fiber cord but also
the geometric crystal caged wire beads from Jesse James Beads (they come in different colors) which caught my eye!
The mixed media
Cocoon bangle with leather accents is yet another example of Nealey's way of using the wire to connect the fiber cord, leather and beads.
The designs in this book are certainly avant garde and non-traditional. A real treat for mixed media jewelry makers. If nothing else, this creative designer inspires one to think outside the box.
