Maybe a touch of Harry Potter fandom?  But I think it is because the wings, large eyes and symmetry all lend themselves to a lot of creative possibilities for jewelry designers. I particularly like this wire owl pendant design tutorial by Brenda Schweder and Wende Prucha for its whimsical look. But even better, that wire coil around the neck begs to have some beads added with some easy wire work so it looks like a necklace!  Colored beads will naturally give more color to the design besides varying the wire color itself.
