News for the America we remember You could set your watch by it. Every Friday evening, somewhere between five and seven, the minivans started pulling into the parking lot of the strip mall. The video store was the one place where the whole family walked in together and argued in public without anybody calling the cops. My wife would head straight for the drama wall. The boys made a beeline for the action section, where the covers promised explosions and muscles and chrome. I usually wandered over to the new releases, hoping something I actually wanted to see had not already been snatched up by somebody with a faster Friday schedule. If you waited too long, all that was left were empty boxes faced out on the shelf like missing persons posters. That little plastic case was a commitment. It cost money. It had to be back by Sunday night, or you paid for it again. That alone taught you something about time and responsibility. You did not just scroll past a movie because the thumbnail was boring. You held the box in your hand. You read the back. You made a decision, and then you lived with it for two days. Somewhere along the way, we traded that decision for an infinite scroll. Now a machine tells us what we probably want to watch based on what we watched yesterday. The kids do not argue over a movie; they disappear into separate rooms with separate screens and watch something that finished in a committee meeting in Silicon Valley.
