A screen door doesn't close. It slams. That was the whole design. The spring was too strong on purpose. Some grandfather somewhere had figured out that if you made the door slam, a mother in the kitchen would always know who was coming and who was going, and nobody had improved on the idea since. |
Bang. That was my brother, at a full run, out to the yard. Bang. That was me, ten minutes later, chasing him. Bang. That was my father coming home from the shop, wiping his hands on a rag before he opened the icebox. Bang. That was the neighbor lady with a plate of cookies covered in tinfoil, saying yoo-hoo through the mesh. |
My mother could tell every one of us apart by the sound of the door. She'd call our name from the kitchen without ever leaving the sink. Peter, wipe your feet. Sammy, don't let it slam. Not that anybody ever did anything about the slamming. It was part of the house, like the whistle on the tea kettle or the creak on the fourth step. Fixing it would have been unnatural. |
