The carpet was a dark industrial blue that smelled like vacuum cleaner dust and stale popcorn. It did not matter how many times we ran that Hoover, the smell never went away. It was a small space, wedged between a dry cleaner and a pizza place, but on a Friday night in 1987, it was the center of the world.

People came in with their coats still on, their faces red from the cold, looking for one specific thing that everyone else wanted too.

We used the two box system. The empty plastic cases sat on the shelves out front, arranged by genre. Action, Comedy, Drama, and the New Releases wall. If the case was there, you brought it to me.
