We had exactly one screen in the house. There were no secondary televisions in the bedrooms, no portable screens, and absolutely no way to pause a broadcast. If you missed the opening credits, they were gone into the ether. The afternoon lineup was entirely dictated by an independent station on the UHF dial. Tuning to it required gripping the smaller, stiffer outer dial and turning it with the precision of a safecracker. If the picture rolled, you had to fiddle with the vertical hold knob in the back. If there was static, somebody had to adjust the rabbit ears, which were permanently augmented with a crumpled flag of aluminum foil. First up at four o'clock was Gilligan's Island. I had seen every episode at least a dozen times. I knew the exact moment the Skipper would smack Gilligan with his captain's hat, and I knew that whatever contraption the Professor built out of bamboo and coconuts would inevitably fail just before the closing credits.
