The heavy wooden door of Mrs. Gable's fourth grade classroom clicked open, letting in a draft from the hallway and the faint echo of gym class bouncing off the linoleum. It was a Tuesday morning in 1971, and the radiators were hissing a steady rhythm against the windows. Tommy Reynolds walked into the room holding a stack of papers against his chest like a sacred tablet. He had been sent to the main office five minutes earlier on a vital errand, and now he had returned with the goods.

He handed the stack to Mrs. Gable, who peeled off the top sheet and handed the rest to the first kid in row one. This was our weekly spelling quiz. We knew the routine. Take one, pass it back. But before anyone looked at the words, before a single pencil was picked up or a blank was filled in, a collective ritual took place. It happened without instruction and without fail.

As each kid received their sheet of paper, they performed the exact same synchronized movement. We lifted the paper to our noses, closed our eyes, and inhaled deeply. The entire room went quiet for three seconds of pure, unadulterated huffing.

It was a sweet, intoxicating chemical aroma. Technically, the liquid creating that smell was spirit duplicator fluid, a potent mixture of methanol and isopropanol. To a room of nine year olds sitting in corduroy pants and scuffed Buster Brown shoes, it was simply the smell of school.
