The shirt was a shade of burnt orange that did not exist in nature. It was one hundred percent polyester, woven so tight that it felt like wearing a plastic trash bag, only thicker and scratchier. If you moved your arms too fast, the fabric made a quiet swishing sound. By the end of a four-hour shift, that sound was all I could hear.

The hat was the worst part. It was white with an orange stripe, made of a heavy grade of paper that felt like cardboard against your forehead. It had a little pleat in the top. If you sweated, which you did, the brim would turn a damp shade of gray and lose its stiffness. You spent half your shift pushing it back up because it wanted to slide down over your eyebrows.
