News for the America we remember |
The kitchen wall had one decoration that never moved. It was a copper mold shaped like a large ring with ridges, hanging from a small brass ring on a nail above the stove. It caught the light when the sun came through the window, but most of the time it just gathered a thin layer of kitchen grease and dust. My mother only took it down for two things. A funeral at the church or the Fourth of July. |
When that mold came off the wall, it meant something serious was happening. She would wash it in the sink with a bit of Joy soap until it shone again. Then the box would come out. It was usually the large size of lime Jell-O. The green dust smelled like a chemistry set when it hit the glass bowl. I liked to watch the hot water turn it into a dark, emerald liquid that looked like something you should not drink. |
Next came the cans. Del Monte fruit cocktail was the standard. She would drain the syrup through a wire mesh strainer, saving the juice in a coffee mug for reasons I never understood. The fruit was a pale mix of grapes, pear chunks, and those tiny squares of peach. The best part was the half a cherry. There were never enough cherries. If you found one in your square on Sunday |
