I love the look of knitted or crochet wire jewelry. My effort with small metal knitting needles was fine except I was gritting my teeth right through the entire project because of the metal against metal. Wire crochet is a safer bet and will save my teeth. Israeli designer, Yael of
Yoola Design has a unique technique and tool system to enable - with practice - even crochet stitches. It is difficult to crochet with fine wire otherwise.
She is back with another super giveaway! This time for her new design,
a complete kit which includes a DVD tutorial. The kit includes wire spools, 0.6 mm crochet hook, DVD tutorial, gold filled or sterling silver ear wires and the tool to make the earrings.
There is a choice of crystal colors although the wire spool colors may vary depending on stock.
It does take a fair amount of practice to really get the hang of this technique. Yoola also has
an active Facebook group where you can share your creations and get support as shown with this capture from her video tip on how to get even tension.
I actually bought
her plastic loom set and some fine crochet hooks a while ago. You can make a tube rather like Viking knit and draw them through a drawplate to narrow them down. The benefit of this technique though is the ability to use a continuous length of wire. You have to work with lengths of wire with Viking knit.

What I used for my ring |
Although I am a total novice with this technique, I was able to give it a go and managed to complete a simple ring. I used my own 28G wire to create a strip 5 stitches wide on the mid size round loom. My initial attempts with the 0.6 mm hook were a bit of a struggle.
I was visiting family at the time. My mother, who is far more experienced with crochet than I am, looked over my shoulder and said 3 helpful words, "Use bigger hook"! So I did. I practiced with a 2.4 mm and then dropped it down to a 1.4 mm before moving to the 0.6 mm hook.
There are 2 basic actions to the technique. One is drawing the wire through the loom and then through the wire loops. It is tricky for a beginner to use a 0.6 mm because the hook is so small.
The second part of the technique involves removing the hook from the wire and then poking the hook through the drawn loop. This sets the loop size. The fine 0.6 mm hook will create smaller loops. I also noticed this action hardened the wire nicely.
I spliced the ends of the finished strip together and wired in a Kazuri and small black buttons, My stitches were far from even - but it actually looks better in real life than in this photograph.
I love how well the wider band supports the Kazuri button. It is comfortable to wear and this ring is going nowhere but straight into my jewelry box!!
