THE BEADING GEM'S JOURNAL

Grand River Bead Society Museum and Library Displays

The Grand River Bead Society ,where I am a member, holds meetings once a month except for the summer months. We have lots of fun learning new techniques and there is plenty of opportunity to talk about our favorite subject and show off our creations. We also have a few vendors among our members and an annual garage sale for destashing! So if you're not near enough to Guelph, Ontario to join, check out if there is something similar in your city.  If not, consider starting one up!

The GRBS works hard at promoting our non-profit group.  Recently there was a call out for anyone to display for the month of December at the Westminster Public Library in Guelph.  I was the only one who responded so I got the whole case to myself!  Not many libraries have display cases but this one did on both sides of the foyer where people came in.

Depending on the time of year, the GRBS also has posters in the case to promote our annual bead fair in the fall.  The display also promotes the designer -  two of the librarians were already interested in purchasing a couple of my designs!

For the second time in my experience, the GRBS is again exhibiting various members' work at the Guelph Civic Museum for culture and natural history until early January.  The last time back in 2013, I had two necklaces on display.

This time I had 3 examples (top right image in the photo below) of wire working.  Other members like Catherine had neat displays of loom beading and Naomi, a talented Native beader had many beaded pieces to show. That's Roxann, one of the founders of the bead society, making the final touches to the display.

We also have Techniques night twice a year where volunteer instructors teach small groups.  I am teaching this basic tree of life wire work project later this month. Attendees will learn how to form a wire frame, make a simple wire woven bail and scroll wire.  My class is full but there is still space for the others.  All instructors, including myself will be teaching the same things again in March, 2016.
