THE BEADING GEM'S JOURNAL

beading gem's journal

Book Review and Giveaway : Foldforming

Not too long ago, I reviewed Charles Lewton-Brain's Professional Foldforming Techniques Craftsy Class.  What he teaches is his innovative method of folding and forming metal sheets. The video format is excellent for those who cannot get to this acclaimed metalsmith's class.   However, his book covers much more than the basics.  There is also one advantage - it is a silent resource as you won't be hearing any hammer blows!

I received his book, Foldforming from Brynmorgen Press.  The book is available  as a hardback or in the Kindle format from Amazon.  Or in other ebook formats from the publisher's site.  The book starts off with a look at the large number of foldforming  techniques possible. It is the culmination of 25 years of work in this technique. As Charles Lewton-Brain himself said, there is a limitless number of possibilities as more and more people "invent" new variations.

It is an impressive range considering most of the foldforming techniques are based on just  4 basic steps. The Materials and Tools chapter is an important section as the author covers vital information on the properties of metals and how to manipulate them. Also striking is the different types of hammers, vises and anvils that can be used. He also covers other specialist equipment like hydraulic presses which is used in one category of foldforming.

Line and T folds are the most basic of of the foldforming techniques.

The author moves on to teach an astonishing array of creative folds many of which are 3D.  One of my favorites is the tub forming section (not shown) where the metal tube is "ruched" much like how fabric curtains or clothing are gathered up.

Scattered throughout the book are beautiful inspirational art sculptures which showcase the potential of these foldforming techniques.

The author said in the book, "I think huge opportunities exist for combining foldforming techniques. They can be combined with each other, or used alongside conventional metalsmithing techniques in innovative ways. Most of the work that has been done so far stays close to the usual jewelry scale, but work on larger and smaller forms is inevitable. "

This book is a tremendous resource and guide for any serious metalsmith.  Highly recommended.
