The playground at Lincoln Elementary was not designed by people who worried about safety. It was designed by people who believed in gravity and heat. The ground was not covered in shredded rubber or soft wood chips. It was a vast, unforgiving expanse of black asphalt that had been baked by the sun since May. If you fell, you did not bounce. You skidded. You left a layer of skin behind and you got up with grit embedded in your palms.

The centerpiece was the slide. It was a towering sheet of polished steel that stood ten feet high. On a July afternoon, that metal reached a temperature that could sear meat. You climbed the ladder, which was made of thin iron bars that vibrated under your feet, and you sat at the top. If you were wearing short pants, which we all were, the back of your legs hit that metal and you made a choice. You could climb back down in shame, or you could commit.

We always committed. You gripped the sides, which were also hot enough to leave a mark, and you pushed off. The friction against your thighs felt like a branding iron. By the time you hit the bottom, your skin was bright red
