The color was called Campus Green. It was not a forest green or a bright lime, but a specific metallic shade that caught the light when the bike was leaned up against the side of the garage. I saw it first in the window of the Western Auto down on Main Street, tucked between the lawnmowers and the galvanized buckets. It cost sixty dollars. That was a lot of money in 1968, especially when you were earning it fifty cents at a time by pulling weeds and returning glass soda bottles for the deposit.

I saved for a year and a half. My father kept the money in a blue Maxwell House coffee can on top of the refrigerator. Every time I put a crumpled dollar or a handful of change in there, he would take the can down, count it out, and write the total on a piece of masking tape stuck to the lid. When the tape said sixty-two dollars, including the tax, we drove down in his Ford Fairlane and picked it up. He did not say much, but he carried it out to the car himself so the pedals would not scratch the bumper.
