Granny squares are fun and colorful to crochet.  But just in case you think these are only for dishcloths, afghans, bags and larger projects, think again!  They can also be used for making jewelry but on a smaller scale. You'll have to use either embroidery floss or crochet thread and small hooks. It really helps to make normal size granny squares first before switching to making tiny squares.


The pendant above was made by Heather over at Dollar Store Crafts. The basic granny square pattern was from Purl Bee (North America).  If you are based in Australia or the UK, you'll need the tutorial by Kirsty because the stitch terminology is different (view the slideshow but don't click on the pdf link as it is a dead one). She made this pretty necklace and ring set below :

A granny square bracelet might appeal those who are a bit more confident with crochet. This tutorial is by Heidi Hengel over on the Speckless blog.


This is a super way use up really small amounts of floss or thread!
