Berlin based German artisan, Christine Hornicke creates stunning statement fabric jewelry. She never planned on becoming a full time jewelry designer. Five years ago, she left her Hamburg travel agency job and moved to Berlin to start over in a more creative endeavor. She initially shared studio space with a fashion designer friend and the bits of fabric she saw there gave her the spark she needed. She now sells
on Etsy as well as on the European craft marketplace,
Dwanda.
She uses not just fabric but chain and rope as the foundation of her tribal inspired work. A self-confessed introvert, her work reveals her inner extrovert. Her work is bold, colorful and thoroughly modern. She often uses crochet techniques in her work.
Christine said
in this interview,
"I'm a completely self-taught jewelry designer – I don't have any training, and I've never taken any classes. I learned how to crochet from my mother, and aside from that, I just have this urge to create something with whatever is lying around. Her work though is testament to her innate design skills and imaginative use of the materials. It was difficult to chose a selection of her designs to feature as there were so many outstanding ones.
A true artist, Christine added,
"My plans for the future are to continue broadening my artisanal
skills and refine my work." Something tells us that we should watch this space!
