Paper does not seem to be the sort of material suitable for jewelry. Yet, many people enjoy using all sorts of paper crafting techniques do sometimes apply these to jewelry making. Origami is a beautiful art form, that if scaled correctly, can be used in jewelry designs.
Interweave recently sent me this book for review :
Origami Jewelry Motifs . The author is Puerto Rican artisan, Julian Laboy Rodriguez who has an Etsy shop called
Paper Edge. He started folding paper over 10 years ago as a hobby to fill his time in between college classes. Then like most cash strapped students, he began selling origami jewelry.
The book covers over 30 projects with motifs ranging from animals, figures to flowers. The challenge of origami jewelry lies in the small scale needed. So the author worked out the paper sizes required for each motif.
He uses a variety of paper types which he lists in his book, not just washi. But washi is recommended not just because of the beautiful colors and prints but because it stands up to stress better than other papers.
The author also covers the different types of sealants and glues needed for protection and water resistance. He does not mention this but if you do use a spray sealant, spray a few coats rather than a single one, to ensure complete coverage.
The most useful part of the book was the section where the designer covers the various ways to attach the folded motifs to findings such as cord or eye pins. One delightful project was the dinosaur pendant which dangled from a chain!
This is a beautifully produced book which will appeal to those who love working with paper and want to do something different from the usual types of jewelry making.
