Check Your Oil With That? Two men came out to the car. One pumped, one did the windshield, and somebody looked under your hood whether you asked or not. News for the America we remember The bell was the first thing. A rubber hose lay across the concrete, and when your front tire rolled over it, a bell rang inside the station, and by the time you had the car in park somebody was already walking out. Usually a kid, seventeen or eighteen, in a uniform shirt with his name stitched on the oval patch. Sometimes two of them. And the routine was the same everywhere in America, from a highway station in Ohio to a corner lot in Brooklyn: Fill it up? Regular or ethyl? Check your oil with that? You never got out of the car. That is the part that sounds like an invention now. You sat there with your elbow out the window while a young man put the nozzle in, set the catch, and then went to work on your windshield with a squeegee and a rag out of his back pocket, doing the whole thing, including the corners, and then reaching in past the wipers to get the bottom edge. Meanwhile the other one had your hood up. He pulled the dipstick, wiped it on the rag, put it back, pulled it again, and held it up at eye level in the light, and then he came around to your window and told you where you stood. Half a quart low. That was not only a sales pitch. Cars in those days actually burned oil, and a man who did not check it between changes could find out about it the hard way. He checked your tires too, with a pencil gauge out of his shirt pocket, and topped off the air, and if your radiator needed water he told you that as well. All of this came with the gas.
