You could smell the fair before you could see it. Fryer grease and diesel and animal bedding, all of it hanging in the August air about a half mile out, and every kid in the car sat up at the same time.

Fair week was the calendar. Not a weekend. A week. School had not started yet and would not until the fair was over, because nobody in that county would have shown up if it had. The midway went up in about a day and a half. Men with forearms like fence posts came in with the trucks and unfolded the Scrambler and the Tilt-A-Whirl and the Zipper out of nothing, and by Thursday night the whole thing was lit and running and loud enough to hear from the parking field.

The lights were the thing. You came over the rise on the county road after supper and there it was, all of it running and turning and blinking out in the dark, with the calliope music fighting the generators. We got two dollars. Later four. You spent it slow and you spent it wrong, and both were part of it. The games were rigged and everybody knew the games were rigged and it did not matter at all. The milk bottles were weighted. The basketball rim was oval. The dimes never stayed on the plate. And still you handed over another quarter because for one week a year you were allowed to believe the next try would be different.

The funnel cake came out of the grease on a paper plate that went translucent immediately and they buried it in powdered sugar, and you ate it walking, and you got it all over the front of a shirt your mother had washed that morning. But the fair was not really the midway. The midway was what the town brought in. The fair was what the county brought. Inside the barns it was cool and dim and it smelled like straw and manure and hair spray, because they did spray the animals, and it was quiet in a way the midway never was. Kids stood with steers they had raised since February, hands shaking on the show stick, fathers along the rail saying nothing and meaning everything. You would see a girl go around that ring with an animal she had fed twice a day since
